AERO CALL SIGNS and AIRLINE CODES
for aircraft that visit Halifax area airports, or pass over in LOW level airspace
Last update August 27, 2013

The following chart is of spoken call sign prefixes used by airlines, military, and other operators that regularly land at Halifax Stanfield International Airport, or operate in the low level airspace in the Maritimes in general. It does NOT include aircraft that regularly operate in the high level airspace above Nova Scotia such as trans-Atlantic traffic but do not land here except in emergencies.   Some operators or call signs commonly heard since the turn of the century but no longer heard here are also included.
Note that the large American airlines (Delta, United, US Airways, American) do not operate into Halifax, but the first three do have feeder airlines operating in their colours (liveries) regularly operating to Halifax.    In the past few years there has been a parade of various American feeder airlines present in Halifax, only to be replaced by others.   While this is partly due to a series of mergers and takeovers in the US regional airline industry, it is also a result of the fact that in some cases an airline such as Delta has several different feeder airlines working with it, and on relatively short notice it can change which specific one operates the service into Halifax.   In addition there might be more than one at a time working for the same airline.  For example, in 2013, both Air Wisconsin and Republic Airlines were flying into Halifax for US Airways.  It is actually similar with Air Canada who have Air Georgian, Jazz Air, and Sky Regional all operating into Halifax in Air Canada Express colours.

2-letter IATA codes
are those used on schedules, arrival/departure screens and websites, and in general all other lists used by the general public.  For the convenience of the public (and some say to mislead them) flights operated for an airline by another airline most commonly use the code of the higher level airline.  For example the flights operated by Jazz Air for Air Canada are indicated on airport displays and on-line schedules as AC (Air Canada) flights rather than QK (Jazz Air) flights.  It is only with closer examination that a member of the general public can discern that another airline is the actual operator.

3-letter ICAO codes are the ones used on official documentation and would appear on controllers' radar screens.
